May 13, 2010

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Vice-President, Cal-W4GMH followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Steve-W6EOD and invocation by Bob-KI4MEU.

The meeting was conducted by Vice-President, Cal-W4GMH and there were 20 members present.

Secretary Report:

Minutes from the April meeting were posted on the W4AAZ.ORG website. A motion to accept the minutes as posted was made by Glenn W4GAG.   The motion was seconded and carried unanimously by a show of hands to accept the motion with no opposing votes.

Treasurer Report

The treasurers report was presented by Bob KI4MEU. A motion was made by Glenn W4GAG to accept the report as read. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously by a show of hands to accept the report as read with no opposing votes.

Repeater Report:

The Crestview repeater is quieter these days. The beacon strobe noise is now gone thanks to Bob WA6VVA working many hours fixing the pre-amp by installing new mosfets and resisters supplied by Steve KD4OID.  The repeater has never sounded better.

Cal W4GMH has been working with Bob N4CU, and others attempting to get the club computer working with the bullets that will go on the towers. Currently we need to link the address of the bullets together so the two bullets talk to one another. Bob KI4MEU has some of his staff working on getting the bullets to link. We are closer to getting our D-Star working.

Training Report:

Ron KI5FR reported he went to Antioch Middle School to present a satellite class. Contacts were South Carolina, Cleveland Ohio and Ontario Canada all via satellite tracking. These kids were fifth graders and could very well challenge the technician exam. Fun was had by all.

Keep in mind those folks attempting to get their Technician ticket will be tested with the new question pool after 1 July 2010. The questions are very different and require more thought.

Website Report:

Phil-N6COP reported the clubs website is working well.

Cal W4GMH and Randy KB1DKQ will be out over the weekend modifying our station cabinet to secure all our radios and computers.  The changes will allow the gear to ventilate through the back side but still keep security in mind.   Bob WA6VVA is interested in making a triplexer for field day in June.  The triplexer will allow our station to transmit on 10, 15 and 20 meters using the same antenna.  This project is in the June 2010 QST on page 37.

ARES Report:

No report presented

Activities Report:

  • Tech night May 27, Contesting 101
  • Alabama QSO Party June 5-6. 2010
  • Field Day June 26-27, 2010

Cal W4GMH discussed the upcoming field day activities. The fire department might have a yard sale like last year.  They sold BBQ, Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for lunch.  If they do not participate this year it appears we will meet the Col. (KFC) for lunch.   We have a group of club members designated to set up the evening meal along with another group to set up breakfast.  All others are invited to come and make as many contacts with other stations around the country.  Last year we did very well in the state as well as region.  This is our time to shine and show we as Hams can set up and communicate under emergency conditions.  We will have VIPs from local and state government officials visiting us on this day.

We have volunteers who have stated they will help in meal preparation.  They are:  Dinner meal:  Bob KI4MEU, Richard KE4BFX and Mike KJ4FNA.  Breakfast:  Richard W4RLR, Bob WA6VVA and Cal W4GMH.  Also following is a list of members who stated they would help set up antennas before field day.  They are Richard WE4BFX, Ron KI5FR, Jerry N8PXE, Bob WA6VVA, Mike KJ4FNA, Cal W4GMH Bob KI4MEU, Steve KJ4RWD and Phil N6COP.

Old Business:

New Ham Brochure was discussed by Cal W4GMH. Cal will be e-mailing each member of the club a copy of the brochure. It is requested each member print several copies to hand out to new prospective Hams.

Richard WE4BFX has sent the station registration to the State of Florida, via the internet and all required forms.  There has been no follow-up requested.

New Business:

The next soldering class will be 6 June 2010.  Bob WA6VVA stated he would help trainees hone their skills at soldering coax connectors the correct way.  If you have your own soldering iron, bring it.

Richard W4RLR made a motion to allow Bob WA6VVA build the Triplexer and be funded by the club once it’s been determined the device works.  The motion was seconded and carried unanimously by a show of hands to accept the motion with zero opposing votes.

General Discussion:

Jerry N8PXE made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  The motion was seconded and carried unanimously by a show of hands to accept the motion with zero opposing votes.
